(LAS VEGAS) — When the 2017-18 National Hockey League season kicks off, there will be 31 teams.
The NHL’s board of governors has unanimously approved an expansion into Las Vegas, making it the first major professional sports league in the city.
The team will play home games on the Vegas strip at T-Mobile Arena. In the expansion draft, Las Vegas will select one player from each team for a total of 30 players and Las Vegas will take part in the draft lottery.
The team will be included in the Pacific Division and the league said its current playoff format will not change, according to ESPN.
