Field Yates, NFL reporter for ESPN, joined the morning show to break down the hiring of Mike Vrabel as the Titans Head Coach. Yates was a ball boy and later interned for the Patriots when Vrabel was a player in New England.
His experience around Vrabel offers perspective into what type of player he was and the style of coach he can become, “Vrabel had a unique intelligence, he was a coach on the field. He was as sharp as any defensive player you’ll ever come across.” Yates said, “I think players are going to find Mike Vrabel supremely relatable. One thing I’ll say about him is he treats everyone the same, he has an edge about him and that’s a good thing in coaching but there was never a surprise about what you’re going to get from him.”
Possibly the most pertinent question Vrabel has to answer is, what direction will he go toward with his offense?
From early reports it appears the Titans will shift to a spread out offense based on rumors about Ryan Day as a potential offensive coordinator candidate. Yates stated it’s important for the Titans to define how they want to utilize Marcus Mariota and his athletic prowess.
“The fact that Ryan Day seems to be the leading candidate for that offensive coordinator job really tells you they’re going to be tenants of that Oregon offense in this new Tennessee offense.” Yates said.
