New Tennessee Titans running back DeMarco Murray said Monday he blames himself for why things didn’t work out for him with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Murray left the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent after putting up 1,845 yards in 2014 and earning NFL Offensive Player of the Year that season. He cashed in with a five-year, $40 million contact with the Eagles, but things quickly went south for Murray and the Eagles, as he rushed for just 702 yards on 192 carries. Murray was even a healthy scratch for one game as he and then-Eagles coach Chip Kelly simply did not mesh.
Murray was asked about how things soured in Philadelphia on 102.5 The Game in Nashville with Darren McFarland and former Titans receiver Derrick Mason on Monday. Murray did not shy away from taking responsibility. He praised Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and GM Howie Roseman. Murray, however, did not mention Kelly at all in the interview.
“I wouldn’t say I was in the wrong relationship at all. They have a great team there, great owner in Jeffrey. Howie and Jeff, they do a great job. They know what they want in the team, personnel wise,” Murray said. “It was just a relationship that didn’t work, for whatever reason. I’m not going to go into the details of that. I have a really good relationship with those guys.
“But I was very fortunate to work with those guys and get a trade done. Things didn’t work out. I look in the mirror and don’t blame anyone. I take full responsibility for it. I just try to move on and work hard and try to make the best of the opportunity I’m given.”
