The Memphis Grizzlies are not the big market team you usually hear about on sports shows daily.
That might be a reason why the Memphis Grizzlies, with a league best 15-2 record, are afterthoughts to more history rich franchises.
Coming of their 5th straight win Sunday against the Sacramento Kings, the Grizzlies have a MVP canidate in Marc Gasol. Gasol is averaging 20.1 points a game, along with 8.1 rebounds per contest. The Grizzlies also have the Western Conference Coach of the Month in Dave Joerger, who was a questionable hire after Lionell Hollins was with the team for so many years. The team doesn’t lite up the scoreboards like other NBA teams, but are the league leader in points allowed at 92.4 per game. This is the main reason the Memphis Grizzlies are ahead of other teams such as the Houston Rockets, and San Antonio Spurs in the competitive Southwest Division. The next streak of games will be critical for this hot squad, as they face off against both of those division rivals in consecutive games.
If you lived outside of Tennessee, would you be able to name anyone on the Grizzlies roster? Probably not, but the no name formula is working to perfection right now.
In a era of offense across all major sports, its refreshing to see a team play outstanding defense like Memphis. This team may not be on alot of primetime TNT or ESPN games, however if the winning ways continue, the playoffs will be a good time to step into the national spotlight.
