NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Titans have agreed to terms with veteran quarterback Blaine Gabbert. According to the team, the deal was done late Monday night and officially announced early Tuesday morning.
Gabbert, 28, was the 10th overall pick in the 2011 draft by Tennessee’s divisional rival, the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was the third signal-caller selected that year after Cam Newton (first, Carolina Panthers) and Jake Locker (eighth, Titans) and has played for three different teams in his seven-year career. Gabbert’s three seasons with the San Francisco 49ers followed three spent in Jacksonville and saw him end the 2017 campaign with the Cardinals of Arizona.
Gabbert has completed 55.9 percent of his career passes, with 44 touchdowns against 43 interceptions and a rating of 71.5. He presided over Arizona’s 12-7 upset of the Titans in 2017. The loss started a three-game skid for Tennessee, who came into that game with a record of 8-4.
11-34 as a starter, the Missouri product never justified his designation as a Top 10 draft pick but has filled in admirably when called upon. Gabbert was on the Cardinals inactive list as the scout team quarterback for the first nine weeks of last season but was forced into action after injuries hampered both Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton; he finished with a record of 2-3 on the year, throwing for 1,086 yards, six touchdowns, six interceptions and a completion percentage of 55.6.
Tennessee has Alex Tanney and Tyler Ferguson under contract behind starter Marcus Mariota. The team was expected to add another option to fortify their depth at quarterback after releasing Matt Cassel as a part of a series of salary cap-clearing moves.
