The Tennessee Titans made a free agent splash over the holiday weekend by signing veteran pass-rusher Jadeveon Clowney to a one-year deal for the 2020 season. According to NFL Network, Clowney’s deal with the Titans is worth $12 million but has a max value of $15 million with incentives.
A match between the Titans and Clowney was widely-rumored since March. The team had a need at pass rush (despite the Vic Beasley signing); the player had a prior history with head coach Mike Vrabel in Houston. And while Clowney only registered three sacks with Seattle in 2019, the former No. 1 overall pick is expected to make a difference on the Titans’ defensive front — even if it’s only for one season.
Just how much of a difference could Clowney make in Tennessee?
“I think Clowney is one of the destructive players on the team,” said longtime NFL insider and current ESPN Seattle radio host John Clayton on Tuesday’s edition of Jared & The GM. “The only thing keeping him from the $20-plus million is the fact that his rushes don’t tend to get sacks. He disrupts but is always a step off from getting that sack. Maybe with Mike Vrabel he can get that fixed.
“This guy is so good … I think he is worth 1 or 2 games.”
